STRAX and Zapier
A self-hosted alternative to Zapier for business systems.
Zapier is a popular hosted service for automating tasks between cloud applications. STRAX solves a different problem: it keeps your business systems and databases on the same records, and it runs on your own servers.
At a glance
How the two approaches differ.
| Zapier | STRAX | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it runs | Zapier's cloud service | Your own servers |
| Where your data travels | Through Zapier's infrastructure | Stays on infrastructure you control |
| Typical connection | A trigger in one app starts actions in others | Systems kept on the same records through a shared hub, plus workflows |
| Databases inside your network | Reachable only when Zapier's cloud can connect to them | Connected directly: SQL Server, MySQL and PostgreSQL with change capture |
| Two-way record sync | Usually built as separate automations, one per direction | Built in, with conflicts settled field by field |
| Who builds | Business users in a web editor | Analysts and IT, with an AI assistant proposing mappings and workflows |
Two different jobs
Zapier connects cloud applications through triggers and actions: when something happens in one app, steps run in others. It is quick to set up, needs no servers, and covers a very large catalogue of applications.
STRAX starts from the records your systems share. It keeps billing, CRM, support and operations systems on the same customer, order and asset through one hub, and adds workflows, portals and reports on top of that data.
When Zapier is the better fit
-
Your systems are cloud applications and there is no database inside your network to connect.
-
You want personal or team automations running today, without servers to manage.
-
The application you need is in Zapier's catalogue and the job is a simple trigger and action.
When STRAX is the better fit
-
Your data has to stay on your own servers for privacy, residency or security reasons.
-
Databases inside your network are part of the picture, alongside cloud applications.
-
Several systems share the same records and must agree on them continuously.
-
You also want portals, reports and workflows built on the same, already reconciled data.
